On Saturday, I managed to make it into Hall H, which is always the most coveted room for Comic Con on Saturday. Here’s a recap of the panels I attended:

Shazam / Black Adam panel

When we first walked into the room, we were given black lanyards with a black device on the bottom that had a white lightning bolt emblazoned on the front of it. I was unprepared for the spectacle that was about to occur. Dwayne Johnson entered in costume as Black Adam, standing on a stool obscured by large amounts of fake smoke, giving the appearance of him hovering, like his character is known for. He rose his hands and all 7000 black lanyards illuminated! It was a pretty cool trick and the panel afterwards was great too. For Shazam, Zach Levy and Lucy Liu and a few others were also in attendance. It was great to hear about the film, and I’m looking forward to both of them.

Netflix’s The Sandman panel

After Shazam, we got to see a sneak peek of some footage from The Sandman and the cast was introduced for a panel. I think the panelists were expecting the audience to be familiar with the Neil Gaiman’s famous comic book series - many clips from the show were shown without context and it confused a lot of the people I was sitting with. I wish I could tell future panels in Hall Hon Saturday that most of the audience is there to see the Marvel content at the end of the day. At the end of the panel they debuted the trailer which was warmly received. I wish the trailer was shown first; it would have whetted the appetite of the mostly curious audience of people unfamiliar with The Sandman.

Star Trek

This year, all the Star Trek panels were grouped together in a single panel with Lea Thompson serving as moderator for all three shows: Star Trek Picard, Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks. We learned a bunch of new information about each of the shows including a crossover event between the animated Lower Decks and the live-action Strange New Worlds. Sir Patrick Stewart and Gates McFadden were also present for the new season of Star Trek: Picard. We were shown the new imagery for the cast of the upcoming season as well as their uniforms.

Marvel Studios movies

The last panel of the day was the Marvel Studios movies panel. Kevin Feige showed up to give us a rundown of the schedule for the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the next 3 years. We saw trailers and the casts of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, Secret Invasion, Guardians of the Galaxy. The panel ended with a very emotional cast and debut of the trailer for Black Panther 2.

Star Trek Party

I was very lucky to be invited to Paramount’s Star Trek cocktail party for press and VIPs. The party took over the bar that was used for the off-site 10 Forward bar experience. There were all sorts of activities including Star Trek branded cocktails, a caricature artist drawing party-goers in Star Trek uniforms, and all sorts of photo ops of set pieces from the TV shows. Also in attendance were the casts, and it was great to chat to some of them.
